Summer Hosting Tips From Expert Sheila Centner Party

Beautifully styled summer outdoor party table

Alongside her husband and business partner, Sebastien Centner, she’s made a name for herself as someone who not only knows how to throw a great party, but also how to make it look (and feel) effortless.

“Hosting should never be about perfection; it should be about making your guests feel at home”

says Sheila. And with her warm, polished approach to entertaining, it’s no surprise that she’s considered the ultimate source for entertaining inspiration.

MEET YOUR HOST

Effortlessly stylish, endlessly creative, and always the perfect host, Sheila Centner has become one of Toronto’s most trusted voices in modern entertaining. As the co-founder of Eatertainment Events & Catering, co-founder of the lifestyle brand Seb & Sheila, and co-author of Eatertainment: Recipes & Ideas for Effortless Entertaining, Sheila has spent over two decades turning everyday gatherings into unforgettable experiences.

SUMMER HOSTING HOW-TO

So, how does Sheila pull off flawless summer hosting with what seems like zero fuss? Here, she shares her favourite warm-weather entertaining tips.

Set the Mood

“Summer is all about colour, texture, and fun,” says Sheila. Instead of traditional linens, start with a vibrant tablecloth to anchor the look. Accent with fresh greenery or wildflowers to add a natural, unstructured feel.

Serve Seasonal, No-Fuss Dishes

Sheila’s summer menus focus on food that’s light, fresh, and mostly make-ahead. “I want to be outside with my guests, not stuck in the kitchen.” Her go-to? A cold seafood platter served with crusty bread and a chilled white wine. For dessert, grilled peaches with mascarpone and honey.

Batch Your Cocktails

“Individual drinks are a time-killer,” says Sheila. Her advice: pick one signature cocktail and batch it in a carafe or dispenser. Her summer favourite? A rosé sangria with citrus, mint, and a splash of elderflower liqueur. Set it out with glasses, ice, and garnishes so guests can help themselves
Embrace Imperfection

Her biggest hosting philosophy? Don’t sweat the small stuff. “People won’t remember if the napkins were folded perfectly, they’ll remember how they felt at your table. Make it warm, welcoming, and don’t forget to pour yourself a drink too.”

Frequently asked questions

Sheila Centner is the co-founder of Eatertainment Events and Catering, the lifestyle brand Seb and Sheila, and co-author of Eatertainment: Recipes and Ideas for Effortless Entertaining. She has spent over two decades turning gatherings into memorable experiences and is known for her philosophy that hosting should feel welcoming rather than perfect.

Sheila recommends anchoring your table with a vibrant tablecloth and fresh wildflowers rather than formal linens, leaning on make-ahead seasonal dishes so you're outside with guests rather than in the kitchen, and batching a single signature cocktail rather than making individual drinks all night. Her go-to summer dessert is grilled peaches with mascarpone and honey.

The key principle from Sheila Centner is prioritizing guest experience over execution perfection. A cold seafood platter with crusty bread and chilled white wine serves the mood better than an elaborate hot dish that keeps you in the kitchen. She says summer hosting is about being present and making guests feel at home, not showcasing skill.
